Thanks Jess for the Connected learning Research network resource. A great
paper.
That element of connected learning is huge particularly as relates to
engaging the learner via their personal side including their interests. To
quote a section of the CLRN paper "connected learning is realized when a
young person is able to pursue a personal interest or passion with the
support of friends and caring adults, and is in turn able to link this
learning and interest to academic achievement, career success or civic
engagement."
Ironically, something I see being left behind far too often with designed
solutions for student learning is the personal side of the learner. There
is an absent understanding of what a typical student in school today is
dealing with, no focus on their strengths (i.e. I have no clue who you are
as a learner but let's go ahead and jump into today's lesson anyway) etc..
Just in case it might help anyone on the design team (particularly those
working on the Preferences for Global Access and FLOE teams) I have pasted
below three personas/user stories that I put together that might help
humanize some of our design work. A look in the students mirror perhaps.
Hope it helps. Andrei
User-stories/personas about learner strengths and preferences.
Alex, 16yr old female high school junior.
Alex is a 16 year old high school junior. She is a hard-working student
and normally a very bubbly personality. However, since she has started the
eleventh grade she has never been more stressed. With a full course load of
AP subjects, college prep, pressures of figuring out what she wants to do
after graduation, extracurricular activities and holding a part-time job
she is fried. In fact, her parents are sending her to see a therapist for
stress reduction therapy because she has become so unhappy, withdrawn and
irritable. No matter how hard she tries she feels frustrated and trapped
with everyone trying to tell her what she’s good at and what she should do.
She wishes she knew herself better so she could make up her own mind and
get away from all of the stresses and pressures.
Devon, 17yr old high school senior.
Devon is a senior in high school and all around athlete. He has never
really been an academic, frequently struggling in his classes. Somehow he
manages to get by but football is really his thing. In fact, football is
really what has kept him focused in school. He is really counting on
getting a scholarship to play in college. His parents keep telling him
that he needs a backup plan for a career in case football doesn’t work out
and although he knows they are right he feels that football is his only
real strength so has no clue what career direction is best for him. He
wishes there was an easy way to figure that out.
Fatima, 20yr old female college junior.
Fatima is living the college nightmare. She has switched majors four times
and still has no clue where she fits in. Upon leaving high school she
thought she wanted to be doctor but that quickly came to a screeching halt
when she began studying all of the “-ologies” and discovered she hated
them. Now on her fourth declared major she still struggles, feeling
hopeless and unsure of who she is as a person, let alone what she wants to
do the rest of her life. She knows she has a lot to offer but clearly needs
help identifying exactly what and how to turn it into a meaningful
existence.
