I spotted this on Engadget this morning - a researcher in Cambridge has
published a paper about creating a 3D rendering of an object using nothing
more than a webcam (by collecting a series of photos of an object slowly
rotated in front of the camera).

This could be a promising, low cost method for the digitization of 3D
objects. Not sure how well it performs with complex objects, but it's
application is really exciting.
