Ajax Image Zoom (Zoomify)

Zoomify uses a TilePic type format at one time was developed by Berkley Libraries, although there are several number schemes for the tiles.
Since they are just images zoomed and ordered there is no reason why you cant load them in via ajax direct from an httpd hosted source.
At Cambridge we have used TilePic on and off on various of the Darwin projects and other digital libraries projects where there have been high res image requirements, although strangely not Darwin Online which probably has the larges image load.
From memory we used the Berkley code for generation. Dan Shepard will know the current state of this.
One other think to note that may be relevant. There are patents in this area that have been enforced (Roxio as the holder rings a bell), I think Zoomify or even Google settled at one point. This is one of the reasons why we bought a Zoomify license and used someone else's slicing code.
This was all several years ago YMMV.
HTH, ignore if not.
